2X ANTIQUE SACRAL OIL PAINTING CALVARY STATION CROSS JESUS CHRIST SAINT VERONICA
One is the second calvary station showing Jesus picking up the cross: Jesus is handed over to the soldiers. They take off his clothes, put on a purple coat and put a crown of thorns on him. The soldiers mock, spit on and beat Jesus. After mocking him, they put his clothes back on. Then he is led out and must carry the cross itself to the hill Golgota. The other is the sixt one when Jesus took the Veil of Veronica: Veronica, a young woman and disciple of Jesus, also stands in the crowd of spectators. She sees how much he suffers and thinks about how she can help him. So that Jesus can wipe the blood, the sweat and dirt out of his face, Veronica hands him her cloth. Jesus gratefully takes it and presses his face into the fabric.
About the two paintings:
These two are the last calvary stations of a series of fourtheen that belonged to an augustinian monastery. The other ones were destroyed in the second world war. I was lucky to win those from the archives of the monastery at an auction at a couple years back. Both got rubbed and scuffed and one has some more damages at the canvas.
